Main poster’s insights:
-Ukraine is abundant in geothermal energy resources, but this type of renewable energy is grossly underestimated. The total annual technically attainable geothermal potential to equal 8,4 Mtoe per year or 98.6 TWh, and its use can save around 10 bcm of natural gas.
-Geothermal resources are mainly presented by hydrothermal water and hot dry rocks.
-There four geosynclinal artesian basins promising for geothermal: Transcarpathia, Precarpathian, Dnipro-Donetsk and Black Sea basins where oil and gas bearing regions are located. The most favorable conditions for the formation of geothermal resources are characterized by gas, gas condensate, and some oil fields. This applies particularly to depleted gas fields that are filled up with water during operation.
-Ukraine is among the countries with medium-level geothermal gradient varies from 2 to 8,4°C/100 m and heat flow ranges from 20 to more than 135 mW/m2.
- Temperatures at a depth of 0.5 km vary from 13 to 43ºС. Low values are typical for the Ukrainian shield (central Ukraine) and its slopes, high values for oil and gas bearing regions. In Donbass, it is clear that temperature anomalies are confined to certain structures, primarily to permeable faults, which indicates a significant contribution of convective heat transfer by fluids in the formation of the thermal field even at such a small depth. The general temperature range at a depth of 3 km is approximately 55-145ºС. It should be highlighted that on the Transcarpathian depression there are anomalies of over 210ºС at a depth of 4 km.
-Currently, low-temperature (40–70°С) thermal waters in Transcarpathia are used mainly for balneology as well as medical and recreational purposes and low-enthalpy geothermal resources of Crimea are used mainly for heat supply purposes.
- Geothermal energy plays a pivotal role for Ukraine's energy strategy aimed at ensuring energy security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and stimulating economic development. The wide implementation of geothermal technologies can contribute to the creation of a sustainable, efficient and competitive energy sector in Ukraine.
