May 29, 2024 Yuliia Demchuk, board member of Geothermal Ukraine, had the honor of being invited to the May Wednesday with WING UK webinar, dedicated to geothermal development in Ukraine.
During the webinar, Yulia made a presentation "Elevating Ukraine’s Geothermal Profile: Integration into the Global Renewable Energy Landscape".
Ukraine stands at a pivotal moment in its energy transition, seeking to diversify its energy mix and reduce dependence on fossil fuels imports. Geothermal energy presents a promising solution with its abundance of untapped potential. Harnessing this indigenous, renewable energy source offers various benefits for Ukraine, from providing affordable solutions for local communities to enhancing energy security and fostering economic development of Ukraine. Despite its potential, geothermal energy remains underexploited in Ukraine.
Within the report, the share of geothermal energy on a global scale, current energy landscape in Ukraine and the part of renewable sources, particularly geothermal, in the integral energy system of the country were presented. The most promising regions for the geothermal development of Ukraine were also characterized, considering geological settings, tectonic features of the territory, the value of temperature, heat flow, distribution of the geothermal gradient and other parameters. The audience was presented with current projects and case studies on which the Geothermal Ukraine team is working. Particular attention was paid to the challenges that stand in the way of the development of geothermal energy in Ukraine, and the opportunities of the renewable source for stakeholders and the country as a whole.
