Hystories research project focused on the possibilities of storing hydrogen in porous reservoirs, such as depleted gas or oil fields and aquifers. Hystories has delivered technical developments applicable to a vast range of future aquifer or depleted field sites, and has provided socio-economic insights into underground hydrogen storage for decision makers in government and industry.
Geothermal Ukraine was partially involved in the project under the terms of a subcontract in June 2022 in order to carry out a detailed assessment of the existing underground gas storage (UGS) facilities in Ukraine with regard to the possibility of geological storage of hydrogen.
In addition, a database of available geological data on reservoir and seal properties was compiled and standardized (reservoir geometry, petrophysics, tectonics, and reservoir fluids). General environmental criteria were defined in terms of geology and surface context. The development of underground hydrogen storage is a key component of the decarbonization of Ukraine and of Europe as a whole. Therefore, the existing UGS infrastructure in Ukraine should be carefully investigated so that it can be used for low-carbon development.
